Meet the Crew - Spud

Meet Michael, better known locally as Spud. Bike racer, mechanic, all around good vibes bringer hailing from Calgary, AB. Spud is a dedicated mountain biker, starting as a teenager in K-Country and then moving on to BC and settling in Revelstoke. He, and his dog Chevy, have become a common sight across town, with Spud pedalling away while Chevy wags his tail being pulled along in a homemade trailer during evening town cruises. A PMBIA certified instructor, he blends technical skills on the bike with a engine that lets him turn over kilometre after kilometre. Trying to take as much time as possible outside, he foregoes the typical winter training regiment for cyclists of hitting the trainer by making the best of the environment around him, with a healthy dose of backcountry and nordic skiing being his main outlets.

Spud is the energetic backbone of Fritterz, someone who can be counted on to make every ride memorable and fun. With a smile and a desire to embrace any physical challenge that comes his way, he's on board when it comes to crazy ideas, such as new routes that may or may not go or trying to push for local Strava segments to make sure he take or keep some of his KOMs in our competitive little town. It helps that his deep catalogue of liked songs on Spotify always has something to match or bring up the mood.

Over the past two years, he has embraced the world of bike racing, competing in gravel and mountain biking events across BC and Alberta. His most successful season came in 2024, winning the Solo 8-hour Golden Rush, 2nd at the Salty Dawg Enduro and a top 10 finish at the Cochrane Crusher 100K. Racing wasn't the only big objective on his mind, competing several large endurance rides such as completing the 300km Dam to Dam ride from Revelstoke to Mica unsupported and the Cowichan Valley Nightmare, the overnight ride from Departure Bay ferry terminal in Nanaimo to Shwartz Bay ferry terminal in Victoria.

Spud has his sights set on a big 2025, with perhaps a bit more endurance on tap for him. Big objectives include more ultra-endurance races such as the BluMoose 300, the Lost Elephant Jumbo and the Buckshot, bringing his total season mileage up and testing the limits of his endurance. He's also joining Fritterz with the intention of creating more videos and document these adventures, as he has for years for his Youtube channel, Planet Spud. Find him on Instagram @Spuuuuuuuuuuuuud (yes that's 13 U's)
